Starting Out

Nursery Classes (aged 3-5 years)

We encourage the very young to attend nursery classes conducted by June Pughe. The syllabus is especially aimed at preschool children and it focuses upon musicality, natural movement and coordination – it’s expressive musical movement incorporated with the steps and coordination taught in creative nursery rhyme form. Simple techniques are learned, and these form the basis for all forms of dance. From here, the children progress and choose any (or all!) of the subjects offered by the school including ballet, tap, jazz and musical theatre.

Elite Training

Classical Ballet

Ballet forms the basis of all forms of dance – with a positive learning environment, dancers learn proper classroom etiquette, which follows them throughout their school years and beyond. Initially, children learn good coordination, how to stand correctly, work with partners, balance on one foot and move to music. They then develop fitness, strength and proper body alignment to turn while balancing, work on advanced level jumps, dance on pointe and reach maximum flexibility – all of which improve every year with training – and develop an awareness of style, learning to express their emotions through the art of dance.

Ballet classes from beginners to advanced standard follow the syllabus of the British Ballet Organisation, which is fully accredited by the Dance Council of Great Britain and QCA. A British Ballet Organisation scholarship scheme is available by audition for especially gifted pupils, which includes monthly classes by eminent teachers in London and residential coaching courses.

Tap

Tap is fun and energetic, helping to develop musicality, style, presentation and self-confidence. We have a great reputation for producing great tap dancers, with ex-pupils showing their skills in 42nd Street, Singing in the Rain, Crazy for You, Fosse and Riverdance to name a few.

Lessons follow the British Ballet Organisation’s syllabus, which teaches students to dance to a variety of rhythms and styles. We offer beginner to professional classes, including beginner and improver adult classes – and it’s recommended that keen tap students learn jazz to help with style and presentation.

Jazz

Jazz classes don’t follow a syllabus, instead featuring a wide variety of modern choreographic styles. This allows classes to follow currents trends in dance and produces versatile students who can tackle any challenges that a choreographer or audition offers them. Classes are great for fitness, creativity and confidence and include technical exercises along with an increasingly difficult weekly dance combination.

Styles range from commercial to freestyle, lyrical, funk, hip hop and musical theatre. Students are regularly assessed and with progression, they’re given the opportunity to move to more advanced classes.

Musical Theatre

Musical theatre at Allesley is designed to complement formal singing training and is a very popular activity grouped according to age. Students learn musical theatre technique while participating in staged ensemble numbers. Lessons include learning songs of varying styles from pop through to classical and these are chosen carefully according to each age group. Students also learn harmony work, theatrical staging and simple choreography, and it is recommended that musical theatre be taken in combination with jazz classes.
