Dancer of the Month December

CALLUM ROBERTS

Hello My name is Callum Roberts. I am 12 years of age. I joined Allesley-School of Dancing in 2001.

I began dance classes with Jazz and a little later progressed onto tap and Ballet. I enjoy all disciplines very much and I feel that my dancing skills have improved enormously since joining Mrs Pughe's school.

The school has provided me with the opportunity to learn theatre skills and to make many new friends.

I became interested in dancing and theatre at the age of 9 when I became a member of the Belgrade Youth Theatre. In the year 2000, together with other family members I took part in the Coventry Millennium mystery plays where the community cast worked closely with professional directors and actors. I was in Exodus and I also played Pharo's son and a slave. This was my first real taste of the theatre and gave me the desire to further my experiences.

Early in 2001 I took part in the Coventry Gang Show where I learnt to ride a unicycle. After the show I was awarded best scout in the show. In the same year I joined the Coventry Youth Operetta Group. My first show with them was Annie where I met CeCe Sutton who played Annie. Soon after joining Yog I successfully auditioned for the Royal Shakespeare Company for a part in Peter Barnes's play Jubilee, which was showing for the season at the Swan Theatre in Stratford Upon Avon. My part was that of a Stratford boy. I had to wear a golden wig and tights! However the show must go on! I was fortunate to join the R.S.C. on tour to the Playhouse Theatre, Newcastle , where I was spoilt rotten and had a great time.

In November 2001 I was in YOG's production of “Anything Goes” and in May 2002 I took the title role in their production of “Oliver”, this was my first principal role and it felt really good. Subsequently I have taken part in several other YOG productions including “Copaccibana”, “Goodnight Mr Tom” and more recently “Godspell.”

In 2001 I left Whoberley Junior School and started Woodlands Senior School and Sports College , Coventry . In January 2002 I took part in the school's production of “Anything Goes” and I played the part of the Captain. All of this was great fun and I felt very proud to have represented my school. We are presently rehearsing “Cabaret” and I am looking forward to the show in January 2004.

One of my favourite subjects at school is music. At the end of my first year at the Woodlands, I was awarded the House Music Award. Once again I felt very proud. I have been learning to play the bass guitar for one year. My twin brother Alex is learning the lead guitar. One day we hope to start our own band with some friends. We have already started having “band practice” at home, and driving our parents “round the bend.”

My other interests include cookery. I make a great deal of bread and butter pudding and macaroni cheese. When I get the opportunity I like to bodyboard, depending on sea conditions, when on holiday.

The last 5 years we have had a great deal of fun. I have had many new experiences and made new friends. I hope this continues.
