Nursery Classes (Aged 3-5 years)

We encourage the very young to attend nursery classes which are conducted by June Pughe - Principal of the Allesley School of Dance. The syllabus is especially aimed at pre-school children and it focuses upon musicality, natural movement and co-ordination. Simple techniques are learned which form the basis for all forms of dance. From here the children progress and choose any or all of the subjects offered by the school including ballet, tap, jazz and musical theatre.

Classical Ballet

Ballet forms the basis of all forms of dance and is very popular throughout the school with practically all students taking classes at least once a week. Classes create a positive learning environment and the dancers learn proper classroom etiquette, which will follow them throughout their school years and into adulthood. Initially the children develop basic motor skills such as standing correctly, balancing on one foot, good co-ordination, moving to music and working with partners. As they progress they develop fitness, strength and proper body alignment to turn while balancing. They work on advanced level jumps, dancing on pointe and reaching maximum flexibility, all of which will improve with every year of training. Most importantly, they also develop an awareness of their own style and learn to express their emotions through the art of dance.

Ballet classes at Allesley School of Dance are available from beginners to advanced standard and follow the syllabus of the British Ballet Organisation, which is fully accredited by the Dance Council of Great Britain and QCA. All students are encouraged to attend external master classes, workshops, summer schools and youth companies if they so wish. A British Ballet Organisation scholarship scheme is available by audition for especially gifted pupils and includes monthly classes by eminent teachers in London and residential coaching courses.

Tap

Tap dancing is great fun, very energetic and an excellent way to keep fit. It teaches listening skills and helps develop musicality, individual style, presentation and self-confidence.

Allesley School of Dance has an especially good reputation for producing great tap dancers and ex-pupils have shown their skills in 42nd Street, Singing in the Rain, Crazy for You, Fosse and Riverdance to name but a few. Lessons follow the syllabus of the British Ballet Organisation, which teaches students to dance to a variety of rhythms and in many differing styles. Perfecting routines of increasing difficulty does takes time and practice but is always very rewarding and learning the intricate steps at ever-increasing tempos has been likened to mastering a computer game.

Allesley offers tap classes from beginners to professional standard, including popular adult classes for beginners and improvers. It is recommended that keen tap students also learn jazz to help with their style and presentation.

Jazz

Jazz classes at Allesley School of Dance do not follow a syllabus but instead feature a wide variety of modern choreographic styles. This allows the classes to follow currents trends in dance and produces versatile students who can tackle any challenges that a choreographer or audition offers them. The jazz classes are great for fitness, creativity and confidence and they include technical exercises - the basics of jazz technique and limbering, plus a weekly dance combination of increasing difficulty. Styles range from commercial, such as those seen on pop and dance videos, to freestyle, lyrical, funk, hip hop and musical theatre. The teachers assess all students regularly, and as they progress the students are given the opportunity to move to a more advanced class which offers increased pace and difficulty.

All students are encouraged to attend external master classes, workshops, summer schools and youth companies if they so wish. Private tuition is available to prepare students for auditions and grant applications if required.

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre at Allesley is designed to compliment formal singing training and is a very popular activity which is grouped according to age. Students learn musical theatre technique while participating in staged ensemble numbers. Lessons include learning songs of varMying styles from pop through to classical and these are chosen carefully according to each age group. Students also learn harmony work, theatrical staging and simple choreography and it is recommended that musical theatre be taken in combination with jazz classes. All students are encouraged to attend external master classes, workshops, summer schools and youth companies if they so wish. Private tuition is available to prepare students for auditions and grant applications if required.
